Former Fenwick & West Partners Launch New Technology Litigation and Counseling Boutique, Marton Ribera Schumann & Chang LLP
San Francisco, CA. January 24, 2017.
Former Fenwick & West LLP litigation partners Carolyn Chang, Ryan Marton, Hector Ribera, and David Schumann have joined forces to form a new technology litigation and counseling boutique: Marton Ribera Schumann & Chang LLP.
The new San Francisco-based firm will concentrate on intellectual property and commercial litigation, and IP prosecution. “We recognized that it was increasingly difficult for big, general-practice law firms to provide clients with the best value considering the high cost structure associated with large firms, and we felt a strong need to refocus on delivering the highest quality work at reasonable price points,” explains Carolyn Chang.
In order to provide a better value, Marton Ribera Schumann & Chang LLP avoids big-law firm inefficiencies, such as expensive administrative departments, exorbitant rent, junior associates, and recruiting programs. “This allows the firm to reduce rates well-below even the most aggressive big-law leaders” adds Hector Ribera. He also noted that “the founders recognized the biggest contributor to our efficiency and value comes from the fact that we ourselves do the work, as opposed to passing it down to inexperienced junior associates who need costly supervision and guidance. Together we form an efficient well-tuned team that knows how to best leverage each other’s strengths. We work together on all of our cases and in all instances the best person for the job does the work – and does it right the first time – saving the client time, and money.”
The partners chose downtown San Francisco as the home of the practice to take advantage of the close proximity to global technology firms, in addition to up-and-coming startups. The four partners are also joined by two former AM Law 100 associates, Aaron Marienthal and Cameron Zinsli.
Ryan Marton has nearly fifteen years of experience representing large and small clients in high stakes patent, trade secret, trademark, copyright and other complex commercial disputes. As lead trial counsel he has developed a reputation as a practical, results oriented litigator known for always finding the most direct path to success.
Hector Ribera focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation and counseling, with an emphasis in patent litigation, prosecution and licensing. Hector has represented clients in patent litigation matters nationwide, in front of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and has led and argued several appeals in front of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. With a background in electrical engineering and several years of work experience in the semiconductor industry, Hector is well-versed in the in the fields of electronics, semiconductors, networking, telecommunications, e-commerce, and software.
David Schumann has nearly 15 years experience in patent litigation and post grant review proceedings, representing high-technology companies of all sizes. Prior to his law career, David spent 10 years designing and developing wireless and networking products, mixed signal semiconductor products, and inertial guidance and navigation equipment, giving him a unique edge in almost any technology setting.
